Balance Program Prevents Orthopedic Injury

Loss of balance often leads to falls—one of the leading causes of orthopedic injury and debilitation among the elderly. Fortunately, for more than a decade, patients suffering from complex balance disorders and generalized dizziness have been able to turn to Suburban Hospital’s vestibular rehabilitation program.

With state-of-the-art equipment including the Neurocom Smart Balance Master, a computerized posturography system, specially trained physical therapists can conduct a total body balance review for patients with various diagnoses, such as vertigo, vestibular disorders, ataxia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, peripheral neuropathy, and stroke. By identifying the balance systems (visual, vestibular, or somatosensory) affected, therapists can target rehabilitation plans to meet individual needs.

“I was having problems with my ability to maintain balance due to various illnesses and medications,” explains DC resident Al Laflam. “But, with the help of the physical and occupational therapists at Suburban Hospital, I have made significant progress. I know I could not be in better hands.”
