In the recent Washingtonian magazine article entitled “Finding the Best Hospital ,” (November 2005) Suburban was one of only five area healthcare facilities profiled. Suburban was credited for its many accomplishments over the past several years, many of which were detailed in the article. In addition, Suburban was the only hospital in Maryland profiled in the story.
The comprehensive article was intended not only to serve as a guide, but also to provide a close-up look at the changing and highly competitive medical scene in the District and surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs. Sharing the limelight with larger, academic medical centers, including Georgetown , Washington Hospital Center, George Washington University Hospital , and Inova Fairfax, the article highlighted Suburban's ground-breaking research relationship with the National Institutes of Health. In addition to being recognized for providing revolutionary diagnostic and treatment options for both stroke and cardiac care, Suburban was also referenced for its commitment to technological advances, as well as the effective hospitalist/intensivist program.
In an accompanying survey of more than 1,000 local physicians, Suburban also fared well. Through a series of questions designed to identify the area hospitals that doctors considered “the best” for heart attack, stroke, serious illness, emergency and ICU care, as well as quality staff and medical equipment, Suburban consistently ranked among the top facilities, often listed only behind one of the leading academic medical centers.
